Most headphone disappointment is a fit problem, not a sound problem. After that, it's codec support and how honestly the noise cancellation is described.

The spec sheet, decoded

Driver size and type

The speaker inside: dynamic, balanced armature, or planar.

Why it matters

Dynamic drivers give bass weight; larger isn't automatically better, tuning matters more.

What to check

Huge driver numbers on cheap earbuds usually mean boomy, muddy bass.

Bluetooth codec (SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC)

How audio is compressed before it flies to your ears.

Why it matters

Your phone and headphones must both support a codec for it to be used at all.

What to check

LDAC on the box is useless if your phone only sends AAC.

Active noise cancellation (ANC)

Microphones cancel steady low-frequency noise like engines and fans.

Why it matters

It transforms flights and commutes; it does very little against speech.

What to check

'ENC' is microphone noise reduction for calls — it does nothing for what you hear.

Impedance and sensitivity

How hard the headphone is to drive.

Why it matters

High-impedance wired headphones sound thin from a phone and need an amp.

What to check

Anything over ~80 ohms should be paired with a DAC/amp, budget for it.

Battery life and charging

Hours per charge, with and without ANC, plus the case's extra charges.

Why it matters

Advertised figures are almost always ANC off at 50% volume.

What to check

Earbud batteries degrade in 2–3 years and are not replaceable.

Fit, seal and IP rating

Ear tips, clamping force, and sweat/water resistance.

Why it matters

A bad seal loses all the bass and most of the ANC. Fit is the single biggest variable.

What to check

For gym use, IPX4 minimum; for over-ears, check clamp pressure with glasses on.

Latency and multipoint

Audio delay for video/gaming, and connecting to two devices at once.

Why it matters

Above ~150 ms lip sync is visibly off; multipoint saves constant re-pairing.

What to check

'Game mode' cuts latency but usually shortens battery and range.

Before you pay

  • Check which codec your phone actually supports before paying for LDAC or aptX.
  • Try the fit for at least ten minutes; swap ear tips until the bass appears.
  • Ask for ANC-on battery figures, not the headline number.
  • For calls, look for reviews with real recordings, not spec claims.
  • For wired use, check impedance against whatever you'll plug into.

Common traps

  • !ENC marketed as if it were ANC.
  • !Frequency response ranges like 20 Hz–40 kHz — meaningless without a response curve.
  • !Sealed earbuds bought for outdoor running where you need to hear traffic.

Typical range: honest budget wired pairs to premium ANC over-ears.
